Walkers Cay: A Fisherman's Paradise!

walker's cay

Walkers Cay was an impressive fishing mecca in it’s heyday, but due to hurricane damage in 2004, the resort there remains closed. I will provide you with an update after we visit the island ourselves in the Spring of 2010. Another interesting tidbit about the island... for many years, it was the #1 spot to interact with sharks, specifically bull sharks. There were shark feeding dives and the numbers of sharks that attended the feedings are legendary. In 2002, shark feeding tour operator Erich Ritter was bitten severely on the calf. It is important to note that he was standing in chum filled water amongst many bull sharks and there were also cameramen present. In all the confusion, the shark may have bitten him in a frenzied, stressed mode. This is not normal shark behavior, but then humans feeding sharks is not normal behavior for either species either.

There was actually a beach on this island called “Bull Shark Beach,” where bull sharks were so accustomed to being fed by humans they showed up regularly as they became trained to associate humans with mealtime. I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking I’d rather just observe these beautiful, but formidable creatures behaving naturally in their ocean home, not approaching me with eating on the brain. Thankfully, these shark feeding activities have been closed down. However, they do exist in other areas of the Bahamas. I have shared many dives with sharks, and I can tell you from experience that it is much more exciting and rewarding when shark encounters occur naturally and “by accident.”
