Rum Cay

An Undiscovered Surfing, Diving, and Fishing Paradise

I first heard of Rum Cay from our friend Scooter. Scooter has sailed and surfed the Bahamas islands for almost twenty years. He told us that Rum had great waves. It is an awesome place to surf, but there is a lot more to it than surfing. Rum sits off to the East of Long Island's northern tip, right below San Salvador. It is 9.5 miles long and 5 miles across at it’s widest point. The island’s name is believed to be from a ship wrecked cargo of Rum. Located on the south coast is Port Nelson, the only settlement. Most of the small population, around 100 inhabitants, reside there. Port Nelson is right on the harbour, it’s main feature the Sumner Point marina and villas. In the past, the main industries of Rum Cay have included pineapple farming, sisal, and salt harvesting. Today, it is mainly tourism.

Rum Cay is a former pirate’s lair, and it’s not surprising with it’s rugged coastlines guarded by deep water and jagged coral reefs. The terrain is amazingly beautiful with it’s rolling green hills, miles of beaches, and inland salt ponds. Rum is a natural, pristine Bahamas wilderness at it’s best.

It is really tough to be bored on Rum. There are interesting ruins of pineapple plantations and slave settlements all over the island for you to discover and photograph. Hart Ford Cave is really fantastic to explore. You see Lucayan indian drawing and carvings on the cave walls. Rum offers fantastic fishing! You can charter a boat for bluewater sport fishing or saltwater flats bone fishing. There are also abundant, healthy coral reef systems and submerged shipwrecks to explore either tank diving or free diving. And, of course, as Scooter pointed out... there’s the surfing. Surfers come to Rum from all over the world to surf the seasonal world class swell.

Places you might stay in Rum are at the villas at Sumner Marina or an island cottage rental in Port Nelson.
