Paradise Island Bahamas: What's In A Name?
Modern Casinos, 12th Century French Monument, and the World's Largest Open Air Marine Habitat!
In 1961, Hog Island became Paradise Island Bahamas when an American millionaire bought the island and got the Bahamian government to change the name. He also built the Ocean Club and the Versailles Gardens. Inspired by the Versailles Gardens of King Louis XIV, the Bahamas Versailles Gardens include a colonade from a 12th-century Augustinian monastery purchased from France in the 1920's called The Cloister. The gardens are very beautiful and include other amazing statues and sculptures worth seeing in such an amazing outdoor setting.
Paradise Island Bahamas is a small island located right beside Providence Island and connected to the city of Nassau (located on Providence Island) by two bridges. A pretty incredible place, this island is all about luxury and living large. There is a sense of exclusivity here even though Nassau is right across the Harbor and quick walk across the bridge. Also, a popular place for shooting films, Paradise Island Bahamas has seen it's share of celebrity comings and goings. Many of them choose to stay at the
Atlantis Resort, which is the best known resort in the Bahamas.
Popular for its "Vegas By The Sea" vibe and its massive open air marine habitat and water park is a hit with the kids.
A temple at Atlantis is actually a water slide that send the rider through the shark tank via an underwater tunnel, yes those are sharks! Paradise Island Bahamas is for you if you like having lots of activities and you have lots of money to spend on them.
TOP TIPS FOR PARADISE ISLAND1) No need to exchange USD for Bahamian currency if you are staying on Paradise Island. The USD is accepted at all resorts here. 2) Cabbage Beach is the place to go for some fun in the sun. 3) Do go to Atlantis, even if you're not staying there, and check out the yachts, casino, and aquarium. Bring your swimsuit if you plan on paying admission (about $30) to enjoy the water slides and pool. 4) Don't feel like you have to let the women on the beach braid your hair. They can be a little aggressive, just smile sweetly and stand your ground. But, if you want your hair braided.. it can be fun! 5) Do make it a point to see the sunset from the Versailles Gardens, and don't forget your camera.
DAYTIME FUN 1) The Beach, you will have beach access from your hotel... enjoy it! 2) Atlantis, the waterslides, the world's largest open air marine habitat, the restaurants, the boutiques, the spa, the casino, the marina... see it, do it, live it! 3) Versailles Gardens and The Cloister, a unique chance to see classical French gardens and architecture in Paradise (Island, that is)! 4) Play golf, on the One and Only Ocean Club golf course, it has amazing views! 5) How about... a catamaran whisks you away to a deserted island where people cook a BBQ for you on the beach and you are served drinks all day? It happens on the Robinson Crusoe Shipwreck Cruise for $55 per person. 6) Go snorkeling or SCUBA diving, ask your hotel concierge to point you in the right direction for equipment and tours. 7) Take a water taxi
to Nassau for the day.
NIGHTLIFE1) Atlantis Casino: plenty of action, amazing blown glass sculptures, tropical cocktails, moviestar sightings, and the Dragon nightclub provides music and dancing! 2) Joker's Wild: Atlantis' comedy club showcasing talented comedians from all over, includes local talent, too! 3) Dune Bar: Relax into the night at this lovely bar overlooking the sea and serving all the best classic and newest cocktails. 4) Plato's Lounge: Atlantis' upscale, laid back piano bar and lounge has comfy couches and sitting areas to get away from the casino action for awhile.
