Man O War Cay Is An Island of Seafaring Traditions and British Loyalty
Man O War Cay is a tiny little cay in the
Abacos
with less than 500 residents. The people who live there today are
direct descendants of British Loyalists who fled the Carolinas
during the American Revolution. Many are still loyal to the British Crown. They are a deeply conservative group. This is not an island to traipse about in a bikini or without shirt and shoes. It is best to show respect to the locals by dressing more conservatively. There is no liquor sold on the island. No beach bars or partying here. But, it is worth paying a visit if you can appreciate that it is just a different culture. That's what I love about the Bahamas, each islands and its inhabitants are diverse and interesting. The majority of Man O War’s residents attend church regularly. The 2.5 mile long island has three churches. One is Pentacostal, one is non-denominational, and one is Plymouth Brethren.
The narrow, paved streets are clean and banked by white, clapboard cottages, picket fences, and colorful gardens. I love walking about the streets here, admiring gardens and poking my head into any shops I might find. The island is full of industrious, hard working, and skilled craftsmen. Man O War has a lovely British style bakery where you can get piping hot fresh bread. One of my favorite Bahamas souvenirs is a bag made from sail material that I purchased at the Albury Sail Shop in Man O War. At the sail loft, you can watch a group of ladies make hats, purses, and bags of all shapes and sizes out of multi colored sail material. They sew a really cool patch onto each one with a Man O War, or frigate, bird on it.
Ship building has been a tradition on Man O War for over 200 years. The Albury family began building boats in the 1950’s. Today, Albury Brothers boats have a fine reputation throughout the Bahamas and the United States. In fact, demand for their boats was so great, they have partnered with a builder in the United States and now their boats are produced both on Man O War Cay and in the USA.
You can take the ferry between Man O War and Marsh Harbour. It is one the oldest running ferries in the Bahamas. I found the people in Man ‘O War to be very polite and amiable. I enjoyed my visit there very much and plan to return.
