Great Guana Cay: Your Paradise Found?

Great Guana Cay is a beautiful 9 mile island located in the center of the Abacos We’ve always just called it Guana, so that’s what I’ll call it here. It is very quiet here, no cars and no streetlights either! Only about 150 people live on Guana, and is a naturalist’s dream come true.

The settlement is along one of the most fabulous beaches in the Bahamas, a seven mile long beach! It gets better than that, because right offshore lies the Great Abaco Barrier Reef, one of the finest barrier reefs in the Bahamas. You can swim and snorkel in some of the clearest water you’ve ever seen in your life, right off the beach!

Things to do on Guana during the day include taking a picnic lunch to the beach, snorkeling the beautiful reefs just a few feet from the shore, rent a boat and go fishing, or charter a dive boat and check out the amazing wall dives.

Guana has a small selection of restaurants and bars. Nippers Oceanfront Beach Bar and Grill is definitely the most popular! They are known for their strong drinks, good food, and Sunday pig roast. People come from all over Abaco for the Sunday beach party and pig roast, you don’t want to miss this!

Guana is just a great island to enjoy yourself doing relaxing, simple, and fun things away from all the turmoil of modern civilization. It is also a wonderful place to bring children who enjoy the beach. The water right off the beach is shallow and warm. There is lots for children to discover and explore on the seashore, and the Sunday beach party is fun for even the little ones.

The people of Great Guana Cay are currently faced with the destruction of their lovely island by the development of a golf resort that threatens to eradicate the mangrove ecosystem and the reef that supports all life on Guana Cay. The locals formed an organization called Save Guana Cay Reef. They have been joined by Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society, the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Global Coral Reef Alliance, Mangrove Action Network and other conservation groups to prevent this tragedy from happening.
