Great Abaco Island Bahamas is the Perfect Vacation Destination for Exploration!
Great Abaco Island Bahamas is the hub of the Abaco region
of the Bahamas. The Abaco region, known simply as the Abacos, includes several islands, not all of them populated and they protect a lovely body of water called the Sea of Abaco. The largest of these is Great Abaco. There are two major airports
on Great Abaco Island Bahamas. One is in
Marsh Harbour, the largest settlement on the island
. The other airport is in Treasure Cay, which is not a cay, but a resort on the island.
Great Abaco Island Bahamas is a great base to explore the rest of the Abacos from. There is a ferry service to get to the other Abaco islands.
Marsh Harbour contains many of the modern conveniences that many of the islands do not. There is a large grocery store with a relatively good selection. You will have your choice of places to eat out. There is local fare and fine dining. Shopping is fun here, if you love beautiful and original works of art, including fabulous and fine jewelry! If you’re looking for adventure, take a dive charter from Marsh Harbour and explore the underwater world or coral reefs and limestone tunnels.
If you are looking for camaraderie and fun times, there is quite the social scene in Marsh Harbour. There is a small community of folks who visit this place year after year and they are happy to welcome you to the bar, their card games, semi-organized outings, or just sit down with you for a friendly chat. The locals here are very helpful and congenial as well, although this is a busier place than the other islands and they are more focused on their work here.
Treasure Cay is one of the most established resorts in the Bahamas. It got its start in the 1960’s. It includes the upscale Spinnaker Restaurant and Lounge, the Tipsy Seagull Bar featuring live entertainment, and the Coco Beach Bar. You can rent water sports equipment like kayaks, Hobie Cats, and Banana Boats. They host the Treasure Cay Billfish Tournament at their marina each year in June. The Treasure Cay Marina also provides boat rentals, fishing charters and guides. It’s a fun place to stay or visit!
Beaches are beautiful and accessible both from Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay. Marsh Harbour’s beach is the smallest, but still quite enjoyable. Treasure Cay’s beach is a gorgeous 3.5 mile stretch of white sand. Wherever you decide to stay on Great Abaco, it would be worth it to rent a car and explore the rest of the island. Check out Marsh Harbour, Treasure Cay, and a very special place called Little Harbour.
Little Harbour is my one of my favorite spots in the Bahamas. I think it’s the history of the place that draws me. In the 1950’s art professor, Randolph Johnston, and his wife, Margot Johnston, fled modern civilization and discovered Little Harbour in the Bahamas. They moved into a cave temporarily with their children while they built a home and an art foundry. Pete Johnston, Randolph’s son, and also a bronze sculptor, still lives there with his family. He owns the infamous solar powered beach bar Pete’s Pub and enjoys talking about his life in “Paradise”. The foundry is full of gorgeous bronze sculptures and the Johnston studios displays paintings by the Margot. You can snorkel off the impossibly perfect beach in Little Harbour. There is a pretty, protected reef within wading distance from the shore. You can hike up a little hill and examine the old Little Harbour lighthouse.
Pete’s Pub serves a tasty lunch and great drinks, and you never know who you may see there. I remember one day I was writing at the pub and having a rum punch while Brian (my husband) snorkled off the beach. Suddenly, a sea plane lowered itself into the harbour and navigatd it’s way toward the beach where the pub sat. As it got closer, I realized it the Miami Dolphins sea plane. Sure enough, it skidded to halt on the sandy shore and out piled a bunch of pro-football players and some of their friends. They had a drink at the pub and then took off again!
