The Bahamas Culture is Colorful and Lively!

My favorite thing about Bahamas Culture is the people themselves. When you arrive in the Bahamas for the first time, one of the first things you will notice besides the lovely weather is the welcoming smiles on Bahamian faces.

The people of the Bahamas are unique, proud, and friendly. We like to strike up conversations wherever we go with native Bahamians. We are always learning new and fascinating information about the Bahamian Culture. Watch the video below and let the Bahamian people speak for themselves...

The Bahamian culture is similar to other creole cultures throughout the Caribbean Basin, but the Bahamas definitely has its own flavor. Much of Bahamian culture is a mix of African and European. Bahamians do speak English, but with a lovely musical lilt to it. My husband,Brian, always says it sounds like they are singing when they speak.

The History of the Bahamas
explains where this wonderful accent comes from. The Bahamians are always looking to have a good time. There are many festivals and celebrations on all of the islands throughout the year. None is bigger than Junkanoo, a large street parade that showcases the Bahamian culture through music, art, and dance.

Bahamians looooove their music! They have their own brand of Calypso music called Rake 'N Scrape. It's a lot of fun to go hear a local Rake 'N Scrape band play. Everybody is dancing and singing, and you won't be able to stop yourself from joining in!

Let's talk about the food! The Bahamas produces some fabulous Caribbean Soul Food dishes. Bahamians get most of their food from the earth and the sea around their islands. Most Bahamians have their own garden where they grow a variety of vegetables and fruit trees. All this fresh produce goes fabulously with Caribbean Spiny Lobster and fresh fish.

The Bahamas culture not only produces tasty recipes, but also some of the most beautiful hand crafts and artwork in the Caribbean. We love Bahamian art! My favorite is the straw woven hats and baskets. Brian likes the vibrant paintings of island homes and landscapes. There is a lot of creative talent in the Bahamas. In fact, the island of Andros in the Bahamas has been producing the most amazing batik clothing and fabrics at a little factory called Androsia since the 1970's!

Much of Bahamas culture is connected with Africa, like the use of Bush Medicine. It is a hobby of ours to learn the names and medicinal uses of native Bahamian flora. This information is readily available since many modern Bahamians still practice Bush Medicine, especially on the out-islands where medical facilities are meager at best.
