Islands of Sailing, Unique Communities, and Fantastic Beaches
The Abaco Bahamas is a region of the Northern Bahamas, and is made up of the main islands of Great Abaco, Wood Cay, Elbow Cay, Lubbers Quarters Cay, Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Castaway Cay, Man-o-War Cay, Stranger's Cay, Umbrella Cay, Great Stirrup Cay, Walker's Cay, Moore's Island, and Sandy Point.
We love Abaco Bahamas for it's lovely sailing. These islands are like a mini version of the BVI's with a few major differences. The landscape is low and scrubby, but still very tropical. The well-protected Sea of Abaco is a long, narrow body of water similar to the Drake Channel in the BVI's, except that this body of water, called the Sea of Abaco, is very shallow (8-10 feet deep) and dotted with beautiful, colorful coral reefs. This means calm seas and fabulous snorkeling all around. The water is crystal clear and has been said to be the clearest water in the world! The color of the water is varying shades of jewel tone blues and greens. It is soooooo amazing!
This is an amazing place to charter a yacht. There are so many fantastic islands to visit. Each one is completely unique.
Direct flights! You can fly directly into either Marsh Harbour (MMH) or Treasure Cay (TCB) from South Florida or take a puddle jumper from Nassau. When you arrive at either airport, a taxi will take you where you need to go. If your final vacation destination is on one of the other islands of the Abaco region, then have the taxi take you to the ferry dock.
If you are going to Green Turtle Cay, you must catch the ferry from Treasure Cay.
If you are going to Man-O-War, Guana, or Elbow Cays you can leave from the Marsh Harbour ferry dock or Treasure Cay.

The Big IslandGreat Abaco is sort of the hub of the region. It is a really great place to stay if you have lots of time and would like to do a little exploring.
As I mentioned above, both of the airports that serve the Abaco Bahamas islands are located here. The most popular place to stay is the Treasure Cay Resort, which is located on the eastern side of the island. Treasure Cay boasts resorts, golf courses, beaches, and fishing.
Marsh Harbour is also a wonderful place to spend your island vacation. We've been there many times as it is a popular place for yachtsmen to refuel and resupply.
Little Harbour has some lovely rental cottages and is the home of the coolest beach bar in the Bahamas, Pete's Pub. The history of this place is fascinating.
White Sound and Hope Town, both located on elbow Cay, are residential communities where you can stay at a quaint inn or an island cottage and enjoy the peace and quiet. Hope Town is one of the most picturesque places in the Bahamas with it's small harbor and red and white candy striped lighthouse. White Sound has some of the best surf breaks in the Bahamas and lovely hilltop views of the glistening sea.
This island is perfect for a romantic getaway. Blissful holiday inns and homes await your arrival. Fun beach bars, good food, and one of the best dive outfits in the Bahamas will ensure you have a memorable time here.
There are a lot of changes happening on this island. One of the Bahamas' most beautiful coral reefs lies just offshore, but resort development threatens to kill sealife there. My husband, Brian, just published a guest blog on
The Guana Cay Blog.
This little island is a famous for it's 200 year old boat building industry. The island is named for the huge, fork tailed seabirds that circle lazily over it. It's a lovely island whose population springs from the old British Loyalist colonists.
You might remember this island as the location for a poular sport fishing series aired on ESPN a few years ago. One guess at the main activity on Walker's.
Abaco Bahamas are a wonderful vacation getaway. We have always enjoyed each island for it's own individual special and unique experience, and we think you will too.
